Continuing Education for Dentists and Dental Technicians

Dr. Helvey offers continuing education courses on a variety of subjects throughout the academic year at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry.

These include:

  • Computer- Generated Smile Analysis
Using Adobe Photoshop Elements 4.0 or 5.0, the participant learns the tools that will alter the patient's smile from what is to what could be. This inexpensive software program can be used by any dental team member as an educational tool. Practice will produce proficiency and, in time, a photographic image of the patient's smile can be evaluated on the computer screen during a routine hygiene appointment.
  • Advanced Laminate Veneer Preparations: Hands-On Controlled laminate Reduction
This course details the step-by-step approach to planning difficult laminate veneer cases. It includes the laboratory steps necessary to fabricate the proper preparation guides and aids that assist the clinician in preparing teeth for "incredible smile makeover" laminate veneers.
  • Lunchtime crowns - making cementable crowns with your Cerec machine
The IPS e.max CAD LT block now makes it possible for Cerec users to place conventionally cemented crowns. Before this block was available, replacing an existing ceramo-metal crown or a crown in need of a zirconia coping usually meant a 2-appointment traditional crown and bridge procedure involving an impression while your Cerec machine sat in the corner collecting dust.
This course will show the Cerec user how CAD LT crowns replaces the need for ceramo-metal or zirconia-based crowns.
You don't have to become a lab technician to provide these crowns!
Dental assistants can easily perform these procedures while you continue to provide chair-side treatment to other patients.
